Hope.
The eggs of white, now colored in dye, while the chocolate and cured meats seem to be more abundant this day. Another holiday for the masses, for we love our reasons to celebrate. We love any excuse that justifies excess, justifies particulars, justifies indulgences. This is America and what we have done, what we have built, encourages this, for this is a celebration, not a sacrifice.
No, the truth here is that the sacrifice has already occurred, and gets overlooked by commercialism. Wait, that is too easy an argument, for I sound, "holier than thou," for I too am guilty, even more than average of this reliance on excess. I too avoid the time it takes to appreciate why THIS Holy holiday exists at all. It is not for anything other than a celebration of life.
When we die, that is it, for even science fiction shows have a hard time describing their way out of that one. Once a character dies, it is pretty hard to keep their character development going, after all, in death, I think we are fully developed, finally. However, that is not true here, this isn't that kind of story and this holiday isn't THAT kind of holiday.
A uniqueness lingers in the air as we realize the reason for Easter Sunday, an undeniable explanation to even the most anti-spiritual of peoples. We are celebration the RESURRECTION of Jesus Christ, WHO IS THE SON OF GOD. For the real theologians will break that down into more accurate phrases, I think for the masses, we can start here.
What else in our lives, or histories before ours is so unique, so fascinating, so argued and fought over that we take the time to appreciate its weight? What makes us so audacious as to simply look this over like another YoutTube video or Columbus Day holiday. I mean, if Easter wasn't on a Sunday would we even get off work for it? Would we look at Easter as another mundane Tuesday as children might get a few more candy bites on their desks at school? Would there be any significance at all if any other day were to be Easter?
The preacher's pulpits will be full this morning, for this is a tradition. A tradition on Christmas Eve and today, for Easter signifies a reason to attend, a reason to hear the story one more time. This time though, really let it sink in, even if you are a nonbeliever simply obliging Grandma's request. Let what occurred this day a few thousand years ago to set with you, make you uncomfortable, for I believe that we have this unsatisfied lust for truth.
Jesus was murdered horrendously on Friday, for this day has passed and you have to allow the resurrection to make sense before you can see the significance of the SON OF GOD being murdered by man, of crimes he was accused of. I say, take this year, this day, and listen to what is going on. Looking past the bunnies, eggs, plethora of artificially made things and to the one truthful thing this entire day is about. The resurrection of the Jesus Christ who did nothing wrong, yet took all the sins from man, carried that and therefore had to be separated from God, the utmost pain imaginable for you, and me, and we have done absolutely nothing to deserve it. In fact, most days we spit in the face of this beauty, but yet, our only hope is this day, this miracle.
God Bless.

Nails through the hands, wrists, feet, a crown of thorns pounded on the head, a slow death, followed by a resurrection. All for us. |
